Pope Francis forgiving 4,444 pedophile priests in Australia after an investigation into sexual abuse allegations against them is false. Rather, a news report published a misleading story that distorted the results of an inquiry into sexual abuse in the Catholic Church in Australia.

Cases of child sexual abuse by Catholic priests, nuns and members of religious orders, and subsequent cover-ups, in the 20th and 21st centuries have led to numerous allegations, investigations, trials and convictions. It has resulted in a dark period for the religion and its followers.

Pope Francis has offered new hope to victims, with a call for action on sex abuse in the Church. Under his papacy, a Vatican committee has been set up to fight sexual abuse and help victims.

Where did this fake news originate? YourNewsWire published the fake news article on Feb. 27, 2018, reporting that Pope Francis had granted forgiveness and in doing so actually helped cover up the acts of 4,444 Australian priests accused of pedophilia. You can read the fake news below.

The Austrailian commission reported that not only were the priests forgiven by the Vatican for their crimes, allegations were “swept under the carpet” and never reported to law enforcement.

“Between 1950 and 2010, overall seven percent of priests were alleged perpetrators,”

“The accounts were depressingly similar. Children were ignored or worse, punished. Allegations were not investigated. Priests and religious (figures) were moved.”

However, the story is misleading, according to Snopes. Their research explained that YourNewsWire cited a 2017 story in the German newspaper Deutsche Welle. Rather than mentioning Pope Francis, Deutsche Welle talked about Vatican finance chief George Pell, who was implicated in the inquiry.

According to Deutsche Welle, the inquiry found over 1,880 perpetrators. However, there is no legitimate news coverage to help support YourNewsWire’s claim that Pope Francis publicly forgave or concealed the actions of 4,444 Australian child predators.

Pope Francis apologized in Chile for clerical sex abuse, expressing the “pain and shame, shame I feel over the irreparable harm caused to children by church ministers.” However, he dismissed credible accusations that a Chilean bishop was complicit in hiding abuse committed by a priest.

Pope Francis created the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors in March 2014, naming Cardinal Sean O’Malley, the archbishop of Boston, to run it. Pope Francis announced he was reviving a panel he created to advise the Vatican on how to handle sexual abuse by clergy.
