Will fans be seeing the last of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. with the upcoming finale to season five? As the show is currently on the bubble with ABC on whether the Marvel series will be picked up, producers are preparing this ending as if it were the series finale.

Executive producers Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen and Jeffrey Bell told EW that they are writing the final episode of the fifth season as a series finale. In the meantime, the stars of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have promised that the 100th episode will be an “emotional game-changer.”

The series is only averaging 3.6 million total viewers and a 1.1 in the coveted 18-49 demo, season-to-date. ABC boss Channing Dungey previously said she was “cautiously optimistic” about the fates of S.H.I.E.L.D. and OUAT at TCA, though the latter was later announced as now being in its final season.

“Right now, we’re writing a series end,” Bell says, “because as far as we know, this could be it.”

This season saw the characters in the S.H.I.E.L.D. heading into space in a future where the Earth has been destroyed, and now returning to the present to save the planet. For fans concerned about whether the show will not wrap up its storyline, producers confirmed that their is a conclusion.

“We’ll never end something without the potential for more story,” Tancharoen said. “That’s how we’ve ended every season, because whenever we’ve come to the end of all the season’s past, we go into that mostly not knowing until the very last minute, so we’re basically doing the same thing to close out season 5. It can fit well as a possible series finale, and it can fit well as just another season’s end.”

Little is known about the plot of the 100th episode. The episode will lead on from the shocking twists in “All the Comforts of Home,” which saw Yo-Yo injured by the masked Ruby Hale. It is confirmed to feature key monsters and villains making their return, including Hive, Lash, and a Vrellnexian.

Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg, reprising his role from “The Avengers” and “Iron Man” ) heads an elite team of fellow agents with the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as SHIELD (Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division), as they investigate strange occurrences around the globe. Its members — each of whom brings a specialty to the group — work with Coulson to protect those who cannot protect themselves from extraordinary and inconceivable threats, including a formidable group known as Hydra. Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Henry Simmons, Ian De Caestecker, Natalia Cordova-Buckley, Elizabeth Henstridge, Nick Blood, Jeff Ward, Eve Harlow, Pruitt Taylor Vince, and Coy Stewart star in the new episodes.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Fridays air 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
